BSI to probe police shooting in Westmoreland
HATFIELD DISTRICT, Westmoreland – The Bureau of Special Investigation (BSI) has been called in to probe the fatal shooting of a member of this community by the police.
The community member – Fitzroy Suckoo, 38, who is also known as “Indian” or “Coolie” – is alleged to have pointed a gun at members of a police party who were pursuing wanted men in the area on Wednesday evening.
Police reported that at about 5:45 pm, a team acting on intelligence went to a house in Hatfield District to pursue wanted men. Upon their arrival, Suckoo – who was reportedly seen standing on a verandah – allegedly went quickly inside the house after he spotted them. His action, the police said, aroused their suspicions and they followed him into the dwelling.
Suckoo, a mason, reportedly pulled a firearm that was hidden under a pile of clothes on a settee and pointed it at the cops. The lawmen said they took evasive action and then opened fire. Suckoo was hit and fell to the ground.
The police said they subsequently removed a .38 Smith and Wesson revolver, with the serial numbers erased and which was loaded with three rounds of .38 cartridges, from the man.
Suckoo was reportedly taken to the Savanna-la-Mar Hospital where he was pronounced dead.
