Cops investigating reports that guns are being stockpiled in Portmore
SPANISH TOWN, St Catherine – Superintendent of Police Terrence Bent, in command of St Catherine South division (Portmore), admitted yesterday that he had received intelligence reports that guns were being stockpiled in at least two Portmore communities.
“The information was passed on to us, but while we have no evidence we are looking at the sources. We intend to look closely at the intelligence and the information so as to be able to intervene with spot checks and profiling, because we need to get to these guns if they are being stockpiled,” Bent told the Observer yesterday.
Bent was reacting to Wednesday’s statement by the mayor of Portmore, George Lee, who told a meeting of the municipal council that he was concerned about the upsurge of “guns and gunmen” in a certain division in the municipality.
But Bent said yesterday that while Lee had not made a report to the Portmore police, a similar report had been made to the police this week.
“We received a similar report sometime this week, and we have not taken it lightly. We will further look at the report and see how we can intercept these guns.”
