Prison service probing gender mix-up
Just how a male juvenile ended up being imprisoned at the all-female Fort Augusta Adult Correctional Centre last week is now the subject of a probe by the Department of Correctional Services.
According to the department, the juvenile, who was described as a “transgender”, was placed in the women’s prison on January 5.
However, the juvenile’s true gender was apparently discovered some time this week.
“The person was arrested as a female and breaks occurred and he came right through the system,” Major Richard Reese, the commissioner of corrections, told the Observer.
“We are currently collecting statements and police are doing investigations [in order to] get to the bottom of things.”
In the meantime, the juvenile has been placed at another correctional institution.
