NIS, Trafigura need to be resolved, says JCC
The Jamaica Chamber of Commerce (JCC) yesterday pressed the Government to fulfil its promises to answer questions on the state’s controversial decision to use National Insurance Scheme (NIS) money to finance small businesses and to provide clarification on the contentious Trafigura affair.
According to the JCC, it was seeking closure on both issues which, it said, held national interest and about which it had enquired in the latter half of last year.
The chamber said that on August 21, Finance Minister Dr Omar Davies had acknowledged receipt of its letter asking about the NIS issue but has so far failed to respond.
In the case of the Trafigura affair, the chamber said that Prime Minister Portia Simpson Miller is still to provide “clarification of what transpired and what corrective action will be taken to deal with the issue, as well as to prevent its recurrence” despite promising to do so in a presentation to Parliament.
