Minott to discuss transcripts dispute with Campion parents
HEAD of A-Quest Dr Dennis Minott will this afternoon hold a meeting with parents of Campion College sixth form students, regarding what he claims are discrepancies in the school’s translation of transcripts for students who want to get into American colleges.
He said the meeting, which will be held at 5:00 pm at the Queen’s School auditorium, is in response to queries by some parents.
According to Minott, in computing students’ grade point averages (GPAs), Campion zero rates their performance in grades seven and eight and in the sixth form. The school, he said, only considers the student’s performance for the three-year period from grade nine to grade eleven, under-representing their “true” performance.
The problem with this, he pointed out, is that students are screened to get into the grades seven to eight in Jamaica, which is not the case in America where everybody automatically matriculates.
The Observer could not reach school officials yesterday for comments.
Minott also pointed out that sixth form is equivalent to the American advanced placement, which is given weight in college considerations there.
“Our students are very much selected, let alone [to go] to Campion,” Minott said, commenting on the prestige associated with the school which is located in St Andrew.
In appealing to parents to attend today’s meeting, Minott said the transcript issue was one of “justice and principle”.
