Khalil Campbell was remembered yesterday by his family and friends as a young man who was determined, disciplined and wiser than his years.

“We think that he was too good for this world. We think that he was not of this time,” his sister, Avadawn Campbell Gaddy, said through her tears. “You are our prophet, our inspirer, our teacher and we love you.”

Twenty-eight year-old Campbell, the son of Supreme Court judge Lennox Campbell, was stabbed to death on January 3.

Campbell’s friend, 21 year-old Rodney Beckles, son of Hilary Beckles, principal of the University of the West Indies Cave Hill campus, has since been charged with Campbell’s murder and was denied bail two weeks ago when he appeared in court.

Yesterday, Campbell Gaddy said her brother was a “mama’s boy” who cherished his relationship with his mother.

“If ever there was a mama’s boy, Khalil was him. He loved her fiercely and nothing meant more to him than my mother,” she said during the funeral service held at the Swallowfield Chapel in Kingston.

In an anguished tribute dedicated to her son, Joy Campbell said it was hard to grapple with his death and that she treasured the time that they had shared together.

“You were my special friend. We talked, laughed and sometimes cried together,” she said in the tribute, read by a family friend. “You didn’t tell me that you were leaving… Since you have been gone, I have been missing you.”

Campbell’s friends recalled his charming smile, his endearing manner and zest for life.

“He was the motivational force behind all the things that we wanted to achieve in our lives,” Maia Lee said. “People were drawn to his charisma and charm. He would make people feel better about themselves…He was a gentle and loving soul.”
