5.3 quake shakes island
An earthquake measuring 5.3 on the Richter scale shook sections of the country yesterday.
According to a bulletin issued by the Earthquake Unit at the University of the West Indies, the epicentre of the earthquake was located at Cayman Ridge, 200 kilometres west-north-west of Montego Bay and had a focal depth of 20 kilometres.
The tremor occurred three weeks after the 100th anniversary of the violent earthquake which destroyed Kingston on January 14, 1907.
Tremors were felt throughout the island yesterday as the quake was almost as powerful as one which shook sections of the island in 1993.
