Work on Fiesta hotel expected to resume today
POINT, Hanover – Work on the US$150 million Fiesta Hotel development at Point, near Lucea, is expected to resume today -one week after the developers close the site following strike action by the workers.
The decision was taken during a meeting between the developers and stakeholders of the hotel in Lucea last Wednesday.
Last Monday, hundreds of workers withdrew their services over the non-payment of salaries and the lack of proper sanitary facilities at the site.
It was the second time in just over a month that the workers have voiced concerns about conditions at the construction site.
Last month, scores of workers staged a protest to demand better working conditions.
According to Member of Parliament for Eastern Hanover Barrington Grey, the controversy surrounding payment was caused by one sub-contractor who allegedly failed to pay the workers. Grey, who attended last Wednesday’s meeting, said the contractor has since been dismissed, and security at the facility has been beefed up to prevent outsiders from storming the site.
Additionally, improvements have been made to the canteen facility.
Construction of the five-star hotel, which is being built on 200 acres of land, started early last year and is scheduled to take approximately 14 months to complete.
On completion, the 1,000 room facility is expected to employ approximately 2,000 people on a permanent basis.
