Valentine’s Day sparks rush for cell phones
A section of the glass door at the Megafone branch at King’s Plaza in Kingston was damaged yesterday as dozens of customers rushed to get cell phones on special for Valentine’s Day.
Several persons, trying to get in on the company’s recently launched promotion, lined up outside of the store from as early as 7:00 am yesterday morning, Megafone public relations officer Sherena Garcia told the Observer. She said that when the store opened its door at 9:00 there was a mad rush to get inside.
But even when they got inside, there were complaints from some of the customers about the wait to get one of the megaphones.
“From last week Friday me a try get a phone and can’t get none,” a customer who identified himself as Michael told the Observer. “So me try come early and bomb. rush the thing but still can’t get none,” the man said.
“Look from when me deh yah and look how much people a get through before me. Me deh yah from seven o’clock this morning,” another customer was overheard saying.
Some, however, had commendations for the store.
“Simple thing, good phone, overseas call free, and you know say anything with overseas and Jamaica is a good thing,” a customer who identified himself as Junior said.
Garcia also said that since Megafone began operating at King’s Plaza last September customers have been flocking the store. At present they have over 18,000 customers.
Under Megafone’s promotion, customers get a free cellular phone after paying a $1,500 fee, including activation. With the cellular phone customers can make unlimited calls to the United States, Canada and the United Kingdom – landlines only in the UK – for free. To maintain the service customers, however, have to pay $1,000 monthly fee.
The Megafone service also allows for free local cellular calls between persons on the Megafone network. Persons on the Megafone network making calls to outside networks will, however, pay a rate of $10 per minute.
The brands of cellular phone offered by Megafone include Motorola, LG, Audiovox and Samsung.
