Golf tournament to benefit Jamaican schools
MONEY raised from this year’s staging of the Caribbean Classic Golf Invitational Tournament in Montego Bay will finance the establishment of computer laboratories and equipment for Jamaican schools.
The tournament, launched recently at the Foot Hill residence of Jamaican Richard Stephenson, will attract the participation of celebrities locally and from the US. The event is to be held between June 14 and 16.
Stephenson, the tournament’s chairman, said that last year 200 new Dell computers, valued at more than US$120,000, were donated to primary schools on the island. This year, he said organisers intend to raise US$300,000 to build on their achievement last year.
“Our golf tournament is still young, but it is a charity on a mission, and that is to provide the educational tools and equipment necessary to give Jamaica’s children equal access to the world outside on a level playing field,” he noted.
Stephenson added that prominent US comedian Steve Harvey has adopted 10 primary schools in Jamaica, and each school will receive US$5,000 for the next two years.
