RBTT workers reject 13% wage hike offer
Unionised employees of RBTT Bank voted Saturday afternoon to reject a new pay offer from the bank.
At a workers’ meeting at the RBTT’s employees auditorium on Dominica Drive in New Kingston, employees from branches islandwide rejected an offer of 13 per cent in the first year, and an additional eight per cent in the second year of a new 24-month agreement offered by the management.
The workers, instead, suggested a 15 per cent increase as part of a one-year contract. They demanded that, if the bank wanted a two-year agreement, it should increase its offer for the second year.
They are also demanding settlement of claims on transportation and clothing allowances. The bank has not made an offer on clothing allowance for male employees, saying this is dependent on what is agreed for salaries. The Bustamante Industrial Trade Union (BITU), which is representing the workers, is also awaiting a response on the transportation allowances.
BITU President Ruddy Spencer, who informed the workers of the management’s proposals and sought their response, told the Observer that the workers were “vehemently opposed” to the bank’s offer.
“They believe that if the bank is desirous of a two-year contract, they ought to place something more significant on the table,” he said.
Spencer said that this is the advice he will give the bank today.
