Police are now hunting two gunmen who wrestled a loaded firearm from an officer and shot at a police party as they attempted to recover another weapon which was stolen at gunpoint from a cop in a separate incident hours earlier.
Two other men have been arrested and charged with illegal possession of a firearm and robbery with aggravation in connection with the incident in which an off-duty cop was relieved of his firearm along Longville Boulevard in Clarendon on Saturday night.
They have been identified as 23-year-old Ryan Newell, also called ‘Blacks’ of an Old Harbour address and Aston Hamilton, 24, of Spanish Town, St Catherine.
Police said the off-duty cop was accosted by four armed men travelling in a white Toyota Corolla motor car. They disarmed him and drove away with his gun.
The cop, who was not named, sought the help of his colleagues at the Old Harbour Police Station and a team went in search of the men.
The police say the car was seen and intercepted at West Street in Old Harbour. During a search that followed, the stolen gun was found in the possession of the occupants. Another pistol, a Smith and Wesson with 12 rounds of ammunition, was found on one of the occupants.
During a further search, one of the men snatched away a policeman’s gun while his crony opened fire at the lawmen. Both men managed to escape.
The St Catherine police also reported that they seized two firearms and fatally shot an unidentified man at a wake in the community of Bridgeport on Sunday morning.
The cops say they entered a premises at Germaine Road where the wake was being held when a group of men opened fire at them from a roof. The police say they returned the fire and the man was later found clutching an Intratec pistol loaded with 13 rounds of ammunition. He was declared dead at hospital.
In a search of the area, the cops found another 9 mm pistol.
