JPS workers withdraw strike notice
UNIONISED workers employed to the Jamaica Public Service (JPS) yesterday withdrew their strike notice after the light and power company agreed to implement recommendations of a 2001 job evaluation and compensation review.
Clive Dobson, president emeritus of the National Workers Union (NWU), said an oversight committee will meet next Tuesday to work out a timetable for the implementation of the Industrial Disputes Tribunal (IDT) Award made in 2003.
The agreement was reached at a meeting with representatives of the NWU, Bustamante Industrial Trade Union – which represents some of the workers the company management and labour ministry officials.
“The unions are pleased with today’s outcome,” Dobson said yesterday. He added that while there was no set timeline for the disbursement of the funds, the process could be completed by May.
“I cannot say exactly what time the work will be completed for the workers to get their money, but what is important is that the matter is not going to the Privy Council, which could hold up the process for another year or two,” Dobson told the Observer.
