Guyana’s president, wife split after 9 years
GEORGETOWN, Guyana (AP) – President Bharrat Jagdeo announced Monday that he and Guyana’s first lady are splitting after nearly nine years of marriage.
In a joint statement, the couple said they had grown apart.
“It is an amicable parting and we feel that it is the best course for us, as both wish to find happiness and to have families of our own in the future,” they said.
The couple wed in 1998, the year before Jagdeo became president of the small, English-speaking South American nation. They do not have any children.
Divorce rumours swirled in recent months as the couple rarely made public appearances together.
Jagdeo, 43, recently told reporters to expect an announcement about their relationship when asked about a disagreement in the presidential suite at the national stadium. He denied reports that he dismissed an aide for allowing his wife’s friends into his private box during a qualifying match for the Cricket World Cup.
