Portland residents cry for water, better roads
PORT ANTONIO, Portland – Residents of Stony Hill in Portland on Thursday morning took to the streets of Port Antonio demonstrating the lack of water and poor road leading to their community.
The residents, numbering about 30, staged a peaceful demonstration outside the offices of the National Water Commission and National works Agency on West Avenue, then moved to Gideon Avenue in front of the Portland Parish Council office calling on the agencies to provide them with water and better roads.
“One full year now and we don’t have any water coming in our pipes. We have to be buying water and it cost me $6,200, and it only last for two weeks,” said Erline McKenzie, a resident of the community.
‘Stony Hill suffering’, ‘No road, No water’; ‘Water is life, Why we can’t have any’; ‘Poor people fed up’, read some of the placards carried by the protesting residents.
