Senate to debate appropriations bill Friday
THE Senate is expected to have its first meeting for 2007/2008 on Friday, when it is scheduled to debate the appropriations bill.
The appropriations bill seeks authorisation for the government to spend the $380 billion in the estimates for fiscal year 2007/2008 which was approved in the House of Representatives last week.
Senators cannot make amendments to the estimates, but are allowed to debate the issues. The government’s majority in the upper house has often signalled a minor debate, however, with a general election expected later this year this debate is expected to be heated.
The House of Representatives is currently on a two-week break and a limited sectoral debate on infrastructural and physical development, as well as human resources and social development is expected when it resumes.
