Several activities planned for Poison Prevention Week
THE Caribbean Poison Information Network (CARPIN) is set to host its annual Poison Prevention Week in Kingston which will this year be observed from May 26 to June 2.
CARPIN, a multisectoral initiative headquartered in the Drug Information Service, Faculty of Health & Applied Sciences, University of Technology, was launched in May 2005 following five years of collaboration among stakeholders in the health and education sectors. It provides an opportunity for national and regional collaboration on information on poison while creating a general awareness of poisoning and the associated dangers.
Poison Prevention Week will feature a number of activities including a conference, public forum, schools poster and performing arts competition, and an awards luncheon.
The Second Scientific Conference will be held May 26-27, 2007, at the Knutsford Court hotel under the theme, ‘Poison Prevention: Towards A Safer Environment.’
Designed to promote increased knowledge of poisons and poisonings, the conference will focus on the areas of air and water pollution, food poisoning, occupational hazards and household poisonings. Papers to be presented will share original research work related to poisonings including current trends.
On May 31, CARPIN will host a public forum at the St Andrew Parish Church Hall entitled, ‘Poison: Keep Your Distance.
It’s the Safest Thing to Do.’ A major feature of this presentation will also be the judging of the Schools’ competition entries, particularly, the performing arts category and presentation of certificates of participation to the participants.
The final event, an awards function which takes place on June 2, 2007, will recognise the winners of the various categories of the competition, their coaches and teachers as well as contributions of individuals, groups and organisations who support CARPIN’s efforts.
