Tanker drivers could strike if pay dispute continues
NATIONAL Workers Union (NW) president, Vincent Morrison has warned that unless the union can resolve outstanding pay disputes involving service station attendants and petrol tanker drivers by month-end, there could be strikes.
“We like to give notice well in advance and what we are saying to the country, is that if by the end of this month we don’t have reasonable offers on the table, this union cannot guarantee normality in this very important sector,” Morrison told a press briefing called by the union Monday to update the media on recent industrial relations issue.
Morrison explained that the contract for gas station attendants expired in September last year, while that for tanker drivers expired in June. He said that, despite several efforts by the union, the NWU is unable to have the contracts sorted out for the workers.
“Petrojam made tremendous profits in the last year financial year. I know that the marketing companies have been making super profits. But, when it comes down to the workers – gas station attendants and drivers – that is where we have serious problems,” the NWU president said.
