Observer vendor, taxi operator shot dead
MONTEGO BAY, St James – Detectives from Montego Bay were last night trying to find the killers of outstanding Observer vendor, Raymond “Big Head” Sinclair and taxi operator, Orette Campbell, who were shot dead in Rose Heights late Tuesday night.
The police said they were summoned to the area by residents who reported hearing explosions shortly after 11:00 pm. The bullet-riddled bodies of the men were later found in a crashed Toyota Corolla motor car that was being driven by Campbell.
The vehicle, registered 7230EY, had its rear and back windshields shattered and had several bullet holes.
Investigators believe that Campbell was attacked when he stopped the vehicle to allow Sinclair, who was a passenger, to disembark.
At the same time, the investigators theorised that Tuesday night’s incident could have been a reprisal for Sunday’s attack on a youth and his father who were worshipping at a
Norwood Church.
Campbell, the investigators said, is related to the man who allegedly chopped the duo in that bloody attack.
Yesterday, there were many sad faces in the Rose Heights community, as residents and family members mourned the tragic loss of Sinclair and Campbell.
“He was such a hard-working gentleman. I have known him for many years and this is a big blow to us. He did not deserve to die like that,” said one of Campbell’s neighbours.
Observer circulation co-ordinator for the Western Region, Vernon Webb, yesterday described Sinclair as a very customer-focused and dedicated person.
“We are very saddened and it will be very difficult to find someone who can replicate him,” Webb said.
Sinclair has been an Observer vendor for more than 11 years, and at the time of his death was the top vendor in the western region.
Meanwhile, the Falmouth police said they were following strong leads arising from Tuesday night’s shooting which left a taxi operator dead and a man suffering from gunshot wounds in that town.
The deceased was identified as Waldron “Wally” Duncan, 44, of Hague, Trelawny, while the police have not released the name of the injured man who has been admitted in hospital.
According to the police’s information officer for Trelawny, Corporal Patrick Chin, Duncan was shot and killed by three gunmen who were chasing a man at about 7:45 pm in the vicinity of the usually busy Duke Street.
” A man was walking along Newton Street (near Duke Street) when he was approached by three armed men. They reportedly opened fire at him, and in a bid to escape he jumped into a Nissan Sunny motor car that was being driven by Duncan. The armed men continued firing at him and Duncan, as well as the man were shot,” Chin said.
Duncan reportedly died on the spot while the injured man was taken to hospital for treatment.
Last night, Chin said that investigators were confident that they would make an arrest in the incident very soon.
