‘Let the tyrants fall’
MONTEGO BAY, St James – A Baptist preacher yesterday described Jamaica’s crime-ridden environment as a tyrant-breeding factory and called for an audit of the legal system in an effort to stem any further growth in villainy.
“We need to dismantle the factory that is breeding tyrants…” said the Rev Dr Davewin C Thomas. “. the case backlog is too long and too many tyrants are getting away free. we need to revisit the curriculum and also hold the media responsible for airing sexually explicit material during prime time.”
Rev Thomas delivered his message to mourners attending the funeral service of florist Juliet Allen, who jumped to her death from the top floor of her home during an attack by gunmen on her family earlier this month.
Allen, who served as president of the Montego Bay High School’s Parent/Teachers Association, was eulogised at the Burchell Baptist Church in Montego Bay as a loving wife and mother to her husband, Desmond, and two children, Dwayne and Danielle.
“Let the tyrants fall. let strong towers be erected and let the teachers loom large,” said Rev Thomas to rounds of applause from the congregation who could not hold back their tears at the horrific incident which left Allen in excruciating pain at the Cornwall Regional Hospital for 13 days after surgery. She died on June 8.
Born on November 9, 1960, Allen attended the Anchovy Primary and Secondary schools before moving on to study nursing. She subsequently switched her profession for the flower business which she enjoyed with her husband up to the time of her death.
