THE two Clarendon men allegedly caught on Monday stealing sections of the Jamalco railway track in Parnasus, Yorktown in the parish are scheduled to reappear in the Clarendon Resident Magistrate’s Court in September.

The matter was rescheduled for September 20 when the men – 25-year-old Andrew Walters of Clarendon Park and Oniel Henry, 29, from Toll Gate – appeared in court on Thursday. The case file was incomplete.

According to Constable Camay Watson of the Constabulary Communication Network office in Clarendon, the two were allegedly seen among a group of men removing several sections of the track and loading them onto a Mac truck at approximately 10:00 am on Monday.

It is alleged that the men ran leaving their loot behind on seeing the police. A chase ensued and the two were caught. The truck, loaded with approximately 34 pieces of the removed track, was seized.

The police believed that the metal was being removed for sale on the thriving illegal scrap metal market.

If found guilty, the men could be jailed for life under section 69 of the Jamaica Railway Corporation Act.

Over the past few weeks the Jamaica Railway Corporation has published notices in newspapers pleading with the perpetrators to cease the practice. According to the company, 1,700 feet of its track have been stolen in Melrose Hill, Manchester.
