Cabinet pays tribute to Vilma Espin
THE Cabinet yesterday paid tribute to the late Vilma Espin, wife of acting Cuban President Raul Castro and sister-in-law of Fidel Castro.
Minister of Information Donald Buchanan recalled that Espin and Jamaica’s Prime Minister, Portia Simpson Miller, attended several international conferences for women.
“The Cabinet expressed its condolences to President Raul Castro and the people of Cuba on the passing of Vilma Espin,” Buchanan told journalists attending yesterday’s post-Cabinet press briefing at Jamaica House.
Espin fought with Castro’s guerrillas in the Cuban revolution and has been a member of the ruling Communist party’s central committee since its creation in 1965.
