No charges filed against Knight attacker
FORMER Security Minister K D Knight, up to press time last night, had not yet filed a formal report with the police concerning the assault Sunday night during a campaign rally at Bog Walk in his East-Central St Catherine constituency.
Knight told the Observer earlier in the day that he would be filing a report to the police, but said he was more concerned about the mental well-being of his 25-year-old attacker who is said to be of unsound mind.
“The guy is sick; very sick! I got some information about him last night that [suggested] that he’s sick and his family needs help to be able to deal with him. It’s not an easy thing,” Knight said yesterday.
In the meantime, Knight said the security breach that led to him being attacked was serious and that he could have been hurt.
“I have been member of parliament for the constituency for 18 years and something like this has never ever happened before.
“I contemplated punching him down at first but I thought that something had to be wrong with him,” said the MP.
Knight, a member of the ruling People’s National Party (PNP), was hit by the man while addressing a sea of party supporters during the rally at Bog Walk square. The man had gone onto the stage filled with politicians. Prime Minister Portia Simpson Miller, who later addressed the rally, was not present at the time of the attack.
The MP’s attacker, who was beaten by angry party supporters, was taken to hospital where he received treatment for his wounds.
Knight said yesterday that he never sustained any injuries from the attack, as the man, who is now in police custody, “hit me between the shoulder and the neck .a muscular part of my body”.
The incident has forced the ruling party to review its security arrangements for rallies.
