UDC must assist rural development – Simpson Miller
MANDEVILLE, Manchester – Prime Minister Portia Simpson Miller says she has asked the Urban Development Corporation (UDC) to examine ways to assist rural development.
Speaking recently at the commissioning of the Pedro Plains Irrigation Scheme in Little Park, South-East St Elizabeth, Simpson Miller said she had told the UDC directors that while the state-run corporation’s “designation” specified urban development, she felt the time had come for them to widen their scope to rural development.
“I feel that in the same way we have placed over the many years a focus on the development of our cities and urban centres, I feel time come when we should be placing the same emphasis and giving priority attention to rural development,” she said.
Simpson Miller said the irrigation scheme exemplified the kind of project she wanted “implemented across the country” to, among other things, help to stem the drift of rural youth to the urban areas.
