D-day for cops
TODAY is the last date for members of the Jamaica Constabulary Force (JCF) to register for the police voters’ list, which will allow them to vote prior to election day.
Cops on the police voters’ list are allowed to vote along with members of the Jamaica Defence Force (JDF) and election day workers, prior to election day, thus freeing them for service on that day.
Once persons are identified as members of the security forces, or as election day workers, their names are extracted from the regular voters’ list and they cannot vote as civilians.
The Electoral Office of Jamaica (EOJ) said it has already conducted an islandwide enumeration of the police at the stations and will not be conducting this exercise again.
However, all election day workers, including the police, would have had to be on the national list, which was published in May.
About 12,000 election day workers, approximately 6,000 members of the JCF and just under 2,000 soldiers, voted in 2002. However, several glitches, including non-appearance of names on the special lists, created confusion about which list these names appeared on.
The EOJ said it is, however, determined to limit the confusion this year and has been urging the police, who did not participate in the all-island enumeration at the various stations, to do so by today to ensure that whatever changes are needed can be made prior to election day.
