Cafe Aubergine adds a Deli
Rudolf Gschloessl and Neville Anderson are bringing the finest in European meats, cheeses and wines to Kingston with the opening of their new deli, Roma Pizzeria and Deli, come Monday July 30, The Courtyard at the Marketplace
“It’s not the ideal setting for a deli,” explained Gschloessl.
“We’re saying deli because it comes from delicatessen which is what we’re looking for. It certainly won’t be your typical American deli.”
Roma will provide customers with an array of items from all over the world including 50 quality wines from Italy, France, America and Australia, ranging in prices from $1000 to $20,000 a bottle, 25 different cheeses from Italy, France and Switzerland, and smoked salmon, smoked duck breast and 10oz burgers, just to name a few.
“It’s a small menu of things we do ourselves,” said Gschloessl. “We don’t want normal, we want instead to afford our patrons a unique experience.”
Customers will also be able to purchase bottles of assorted mustards, oils and vinegars at Roma.
“We’re looking to provide patrons with top quality and things they’d be hard-pressed to find elsewhere in Jamaica,” said Gschloessl.
Of course, being on an island, what would a deli be without seafood? Gschloessl is in the final stages of setting up a sea water lobster tank to sell live lobsters which customers can purchase to cook themselves or have prepared by one of Roma’s chefs.
“We have two European chefs who work alongside our excellent Jamaican ones,” said Gschloessl. “They are all very loyal and creative.”
Everything at Roma will be fresh. Patrons will be able to watch their sandwiches being made to order and filled just the way they want it.
Roma will also provide catering services. Customers can pre-order meat, fish or cheese platters for pickup or delivery.
So with all these fine wines and foods coming from around the world, who can afford to eat at Roma all the time?
“We’re going to have prices that everybody can afford,” explains Gschloessl. “Nobody should have to compromise on taste and quality because of insufficient funds.”
Customers will also be able to enjoy their wine and cheese or sandwiches at home or right outside the deli at one of the quaint tables. It just might, we imagine, transport you to a great little bistro in Paris.
Roma will have a ‘soft’ opening at 9:00 a.m Monday July 30 with an official ceremony planned for 5:00 p.m on the same day.
