Mullings calls for smooth JPS transfer
OPPOSITION spokesman on mining, energy and telecommunications, Clive Mullings, said that the government must ensure a smooth ownership transition at the Jamaica Public Service (JPS) Company.
In a statement released on Tuesday, Mullings said that the transition should be done without any dislocation to the customers of the JPS or the company’s employees.
He said that Minister of Industry, Technology, Energy and Commerce, Phillip Paulwell, should make a full disclosure on whether current owners, Mirant, or newcomer Marubeni Corporation, will be responsible for honouring the agreement for a reclassification of the jobs emerging from an evaluation done some seven years ago.
“The new licence with Marubeni must ensure that worker contracts are transparent and cannot be unilateral,” Mullings said.
The four unions representing employees of the JPS are expected to be advised by the end of the week on how and when the reclassification will be done.
Finance and planning minister, Dr Omar Davies, has assured the unions that the agreement will be honoured.
