Two JLP workers shot and injured in Vineyard Town
TWO Jamaica Labour Party (JLP) workers were yesterday shot and injured along Wexford Road, Vineyard Town in what appears to be the latest spate of political violence in the South East St Andrew constituency.
The party’s zone supervisor for the constituency, Samuel Mullings, and assistant zone supervisor, Dionne Davidson, were shot by two unknown assailants as they helped to distribute roofing materials to residents of the area whose houses were damaged during the passage of Hurricane Dean.
According to the Constabulary Communication Network (CCN), the incident happened at approximately 10:00 am.
“Mullings and Davidson were among a group of persons on Wexford Road handing out relief items when two men rode up on bicycles and opened fire at the [group] before fleeing the area,” the CCN said.
The CCN added that it was later discovered that Mullings and Davidson were shot. They were both rushed to hospital where they were admitted in serious condition up until late last night.
According to JLP candidate for the constituency, Joan Gordon-Webley, Mullings was battling for life in hospital after he was shot in the lower part of his abdomen, while Davidson, who was shot in the leg, could possibly lose the appendage.
The shooting of the two workers came nearly one month after Gordon-Webley’s office manager, Sanjay Ebanks, was shot and killed.
Ebanks was allegedly shot while on his way home from the constituency office in the area on July 19.
“If they shoot all my supervisors around me they will render me impotent,” Gordon-Webley told the Observer, adding that both workers had been threatened on a previous occasion and had since made reports to the police.
“[This] will affect my organisation greatly because I sectionalise my area and I have various persons who head small sections and they have shot my number one and number two in that area,” she said.
This shooting, she went on, could cripple her operations with the constituency as her workers were now afraid to carry out their duties freely.
