Smooth process in St Andrew
POLICE officers and volunteer election day workers cast their ballots with little or no hitches in sections of St Andrew yesterday.
Minutes after the polling stations were opened, scores of cops formed two queues at the Mobile Reserve headquarters to exercise their franchise.
The lines moved slowly at first and a few officers were overheard complaining about the long time it was taking for them to cast their votes. But things soon smoothed out and voting went on in earnest.
Returning officer for that polling division, Paul McCallum, said despite the early hitch things were going according to plan.
“It’s just that everyone wants to come out early, vote and return to their duties. By early afternoon things will slow to a trickle,” McCallum said.
By late morning, voting had petered out at the Constant Spring Police station where cops who work in the St Andrew North Western and St Andrew East rural constituencies cast their ballots.
Over at the Hunts Bay and Half-Way-Tree police stations, voting also went smoothly.
At the Haile Selassie Comprehensive High School where election day workers in South West St Andrew voted, the report of election officials on duty was the same.
Presiding Officer, Felley Douglas, said over 60 per cent of the 260 registered voters, had cast their ballots before 2:00 pm.
