Teenage girl gets two-year probation
A 16-year-old girl who doused a group of family members with a corrosive substance was on Friday sentenced to a two-year probation and ordered to attend weekly service at the Cross Roads Seventh-day Adventist Church for the duration of her sentence.
Justice Patrick Brooks also ordered the teen, who is approximately four months pregnant, to attend the Woman’s Crisis Centre until the birth of her child and that she be supervised by probation officers.
The Kingston resident picked up the sentence in the Home Circuit Court after pleading guilty to charges of assault occasioning grievous bodily harm in July, following her arrest on May 4 for dousing seven members of a family with a corrosive substance.
The late night incident occurred after the teen got into an altercation with a woman, Erica Gordon, who confronted her about rumours she had been spreading about the woman’s daughter.
During the altercation she was stabbed in the neck and upper and lower left arm. The teen told police that she ran and was chased by Gordon who proceeded to throw stones at her.
She said that she later sought refuge at a neighbour’s house but was still hounded by Gordon. According to the teen, she threw the substance on Gordon and six of her family members out of fear that Gordon would also attack her grandmother after confronting her with a knife.
One member of the family whose son was burnt during the ‘acid’ attack asked the judge to be lenient with the remorseful teen.
