Cops kill man, recover firearm in St James
MONTEGO BAY, St James – A man who the police said was involved in a number of shootings, rape cases and other major crimes committed in the parish was yesterday morning shot and killed after he and one of his cronies allegedly engaged members of a Mount Salem police party in a shoot-out.
He was identified by the police as 21-year-old Akkeem Dussard, also called ‘Ockra Slime’ of Melbourne Avenue in Salt Spring, St James.
Police said they recovered a firearm in the aftermath of the fatal shooting of Dussard, bringing to 163 the number of illegal guns seized in the parish this year.
According to Constabulary Communication Network (CCN) liaison officer for St James, Corporal Camille Tracy, about 10:45 yesterday morning the Mount Salem police were on patrol in the Porto Bello community when they spotted two ‘suspicious-looking’ men, who, upon the approach of the police, opened fire in their direction.
The police, said Tracy, returned the fire and the two men ran. The area, she added, was subsequently searched and Dussard was found suffering from gunshot wounds. He was taken to the Cornwalll Regional Hospital where he was pronounced dead.
The CCN spokesperson said a .380 Russian-made semi-automatic pistol, with a magazine containing two .380 cartridges, was found beside the dead man. The other man escaped, she said.
According to the police, Dussard was out on bail on charges of rape and abduction and was due to return to the Montego Bay Resident Magistrate’s Court November 30. Dussard was also wanted for questioning in other crimes committed in the parish, said Tracy.
