Cop accused of stealing motorcycle arrested
MONTEGO BAY, St James – A 22-year-old police constable and two civilians were yesterday arrested for allegedly stealing a motorbike from the Freeport Police Station in Montego Bay.
Commanding officer for St James, Superintendent Steve McGregor, said a file has been prepared and submitted to the Office of the Director of Public Prosecutions (DPP) and he anticipates that a ruling would be returned in a short time.
“As commanding officer for the division I want to assure the public that any alleged dishonest, illegal or unlawful act by any member of the constabulary will be treated in the same way as when committed by any member of the public,” the St James police chief said.
The constable, along with the two civilians, allegedly entered the police station about 2:30 yesterday morning in a white Nissan panel van and proceeded to the back of the compound, where crashed vehicles are kept, a police source said.
The constable’s colleagues, according to the source, hid themselves and observed as the trio allegedly proceeded to load a motorbike that was involved in an accident into the van and attempted to leave the station
At that point the ‘cops in hiding’, the source said, intercepted the van and the constable reportedly alighted and attempted to greet his fellow officers, who informed him that they had been observing his movements. They then proceeded to search the van where they found the motorbike allegedly stolen from the station along with another bike, which he said was his.
The constable and the two civilians were subsequently arrested.
In the meantime, McGregor said the police were making checks on the particulars of the van, which was used in the incident, as the chassis number and other documentation about the vehicle were ‘suspicious’.
