Rescuers search for 11 missing in Haiti boat wreck
PORT-AU-PRINCE, Haiti (AP) – Rescuers continued their search for 11 people in waters off Haiti’s far western point yesterday, days after their wooden boat capsized, a civil protection official said.
The boat sank Friday near Jeremie, on Haiti’s southern claw, with 17 people aboard, according to area civil protection co-ordinator Sylvera Guillaume. Six passengers were able to swim to shore and were treated for exposure.
The passengers were travelling to the Haitian capital of Port-au-Prince to sell wood and charcoal cut from the impoverished country’s few remaining trees, Guillaume said.
