Trelawny’s town clown… Dwight Samuels is Mr Comedy Buss 2007
Air Jamaica ramp attendant, Dwight Samuels, attributes his success in the second annual Comedy Buss competition to a delivery of superb “original material”, gleaned, no doubt, from the many books he has wormed his way through.
Now, the father of three who hails from Wakefield in Trelawny and now resides in Lilliput, St James, is reading books and newspapers, to get a feel of the culture and keep up with current events in Trinidad – where he will perform in January during the Carnival celebrations as part of his prize package.
He said he would be able to use some of his Comedy Buss material in Trinidad, but noted that he will have to pen new material as much of what he did in the competition was culture specific.
“That’s what I want to do,” he added. “I want to so something that speaks to people in general not just people of a particular culture.”
Samuels, who was able to win club rocker seven of the nine times in the competition, attributes his comedic personality and ability to his upbringing and the environment created by his mother, Viris Smith, or “Mama Viris” as she is affectionately called.
“I am the town clown,” says Samuels. “The work clown, the one who is always cracking everybody else up.”
The father of three, now busy holding down a full-time job and doing shows all over the island, says he intends to take his work internationally and hopes to pave the way for other local acts.
“I will not settle for being a big fish in a little pond,” says Samuels. “I want to be a little fish in a big pond.”
