What will local government do for us?
The local government polls are now behind us and the elected councillors are ready to get down to some hard work in a bid to tackle the raft of social and economic ills that beset many of the communities.
But what really are some of the pressing needs of the divisions that residents would like to see addressed in their communities?
Today we ask some residents in the Western region.
Michael Williams
(Sherwood Content Division – Trelawny)
“I would like the incoming councillor to address the poor road conditions in some sections of the division, particularly the farm roads. I would also like the councillor to do improvement work on the minor water supply systems in the area.
Based on recent pronouncements by the prime minister (Bruce Golding) about local government reform I am looking forward to the Trelawny Parish Council addressing those issues.”
Ezra Cooke
(Mount Salem Division – St James)
“I would like to see improvements in the water supply and the cleaning of drains in the area. I would also like to see the construction of more houses and some form of skills training for the youths.”
Vernal Campbell
(Hopewell Division – Hanover)
“As President of the Hopewell Citizens’ Association I would like to see the construction of the Hopewell Transport Centre and the development of the Orchard Bathing Beach which has been in the pipeline for quite sometime, be treated as priority.
I would like also for the incoming councillor to address the poor road conditions in some community and to implement beautification projects.”
Hugh Dixon
(Albert Town Division – Trelawny)
“The councillor that is elected must develop a consciousness about local governance. The local precinct is the cradle of our environment and if not properly serviced will make life unbearable for community residents. Whether resources are plentiful or scarce the councillor must communicate with the citizenry on a regular basis as community participation is a vital part of the local governance.”
Clive Baker
(Petersfied Division – Westmoreland)
“I would like to see the erection of recreational centres in the area so that the many youths in the communities can find something to do. We also need more jobs.”
