McLean moots return to league format
MONTEGO BAY, St James
The Jamaica Football Federation (JFF) Western Confederation Super League could return to a league format next season if returning chairman Linnell McLean gets his wishes.
Speaking at Thursday’s awards ceremony of the Western Confederation Super League at the Jamaica Grandiosa hotel, McLean said he would be “suggesting some changes as we go forward… I will be suggesting we do away with the semi-final and final format of the Super League and revert to a straight league”,
After being played on a league format for a few years, the organisers reverted to a semi-finals/finals format the last two seasons.
The switch back to the play-offs benefited Wadadah this past season as despite being the fourth best team after the first two rounds, they upset Seba United who had dominated the competition, winning the mid-season final and was tops in the points tables.
McLean, the president of the Trelawny Football Association, also suggested that each team in the league be “franchised” and the administrations be properly structured to attract sponsorship. McLean, who took over the chairmanship of the Confederation after the sudden resignation in April, will return unopposed at the upcoming election after being the only person nominated for the position.
St James’ David Watt, who will replace Everton Tomlinson as the vice-chairman, is the only change in the executive of the Confederation, Mclean also announced.
Carol Gentles of Trelawny will return as the General Secretary with Westmoreland’s Copeland Bailey the assistant secretary and Sheridan Samuels of Hanover the Treasurer.
The executive council is completed by the presidents of each of the four Football Associations as well as the chairman of each of the four committees.
