Maldon High for 1st round of 20/20 Football Fiesta final
MONTEGO BAY, St James – Surprise team Maldon High will line up in Saturday’s first round of the final of the Linkz96FM 20/20 Football Fiesta at Jarrett Park, set to start at 1:00 pm.
The upper St James school that finished third in Zone A of the daCosta Cup last season, surprised both daCosta Cup champions St James High and Cornwall College, beating both teams on penalty kicks in last Saturday’s Zone A eliminations played at Cornwall College.
Maldon will join nine other teams in the lone day tournament on Saturday.
Originally only eight teams were scheduled to take part but a mix-up in the Zone E eliminations at St Elizabeth Technical saw that play-off end in confusion and the decision was taken for all three teams to play on Saturday.
Frome Technical, winners of Zone B, and Grange Hill, who were declared the best second-placed team; Zone C winners Godfrey Stewart, Zone D winners Browns Town as well as the three teams from Zone E- St Elizabeth Technical, Munro College and Lacovia will be joined by St James High and defending champions Jamaica College in the first round.
On Saturday at Cornwall, Maldon which is being coached by former Godfrey Stewart High coach Carl ‘Long Life’ Palmer, first came from behind to draw 10-1 with St James High in the first game before winning 3-2 on penalties.
Maldon then held Cornwall to a 0-0 draw before winning 2-0 on penalties.
In the third game of the day Cornwall sentenced St James High to their second loss of the day, beating them on penalties after playing to a 0-0 draw.
