Observer listed on Newseum’s world ‘Top 10’ front pages again
Yesterday’s Sunday Observer presentation of Jamaica’s achievements at the World Championships in Berlin, Germany was voted among the world’s Top 10 front-page designs by Newseum, the interactive museum of news and journalism in Washington,DC, USA.
It was the second time in six days that the Observer’s front page was listed among Newseum’s Top 10, the first being last Monday’s reporting of Usain Bolt’s 9.58 seconds world record run in the 100 metres at the World Championships.
Yesterday’s Sunday Observer front page was actually a wrap incorporating the back page of the newspaper and featured Observer Photo Editor Bryan Cummings’ pictures of Jamaica’s victorious men’s and women’s 4x100m relay teams after both events on Saturday.
Of the Top 10 pages chosen by Newseum and posted on its website, the Sunday Observer was the only one reporting on the World Championships. This is in comparison to last Monday’s Top 10 of which five front pages featured Bolt’s amazing victory.
Among yesterday’s Top 10 were the Al Watan Daily printed in Kuwait; Japan’s Ashai Shimbun; England’s Sunday Mail; Gulf News from the United Arab Emirates; the English edition of Israeli newspaper Haaretz; The Jerusalem Post, another Israeli newspaper; Canadian publications Ottawa Citizen and Sunday Star; and the Star newspaper in Malaysia.
Newseum says that each weekday it chooses the “Top 10 most interesting front pages from among the hundreds of newspapers received that morning. On various days, the selections may focus on dramatic headlines or sensational photos or innovative design.”
Just two months ago, the June 26 Observer front-page report on the death of pop icon Michael Jackson was one of 11 highlighted by US-based BET.com over the June 27-28 weekend for coverage of the star’s passing.
The highlight – under the heading ‘Michael Jackson’s death: the world reacts’ – looked at how newspapers worldwide carried the tragic news and singled out other papers such as the New York Times and Taiwan’s Daily Evening News.
The website praised the Observer for its catchy headline, ‘Speechless’. “In one word, the publication captures the emotion of shocked fans and critics around the world,” the BET caption read.
Here are some of yesterday’s Top 10 front pages chosen by Newseum.
