Sandals hosts inaugural seniors quiz
SANDALS Dunn’s River Villagio recently staged its inaugural seniors quiz, as part of efforts to promote lifelong learning.
The competing teams represented Brown’s Town Elementary and Claremont Elementary schools and battled each other in a format similar to that of the annual Schools’ Challenge Quiz competition.
The female seniors were dressed as young girls in tunics with ribbons, complete with their white socks and black shoes. The men wore khaki uniforms with brown socks and shoes.
Those who donned blue represented Brown’s Town while those in green represented Claremont.
The teams were quizzed in areas of information technology (IT), English, history, geography, and Bible knowledge and mathematics.
Claremont had an early lead of 18 to 16 at the end of the first two rounds and in the speed section scored a whopping 42 points to Brown’s Town’s 34. But Brown’s Town was apparently waiting for the IT segment and saved their energy for the buzzer section where they triumphed, scoring a total of 60 points to Claremont’s 54.
In the end, it was a closely fought contest enjoyed by the more than 100 people present.
Susan Pitter, group public relations and communications manager, in congratulating the teams, emphasised the importance of lifelong learning as a way forward, while noting that the combined ages of the seniors came 1,089 years.
The quiz competition culminated a week of educational activities held in collaboration with Sandals Resorts. The activities included:
. school visits that saw sessions conducted in history, the displaying of artifacts and storytelling; and
. the donation of fabric by the Sandals Foundation for the creation drapes, spreads and cushions for the St Ann and Trelawny infirmaries, schools, and their centres by the seniors.
There was also a special entertainment event held for school children at the National Council of Seniors Citizens Office.
