NBL West resumes this weekend
MONTEGO BAY, St James -The return round of the National Basketball League West will get underway this weekend with two games – one Saturday and the other Sunday – at the Montego Bay Cricket Club.
Leaders Hoopers will take on Inner-city Avalanche on Saturday at 8:00 pm, while on Sunday winless Sav Hawks and Granville Jaguars will meet at 6:00 pm.
Hoopers lead with maximum eight points after winning all four first-round games and are followed by Granville Jaguars on seven points, Catherine Hall with 6, Avalanche on five and Sav Hawks at the bottom on four points.
On Sunday, Jaguars beat Avalanche 78-60 in one game while All-Stars extended Hawks’ winless run with a 80-65 score.
Jaguars rebounded from their loss to Hoopers the previous week to dominate Avalanche, rushing to a 42-26 lead at half-time thanks to 18 points and 13 rebounds from Leroy Lawrence; 15 points from Craig Bernard and 11 points from Ryan Harrison.
Michael Haughton led Avalanche with 17 points, while Nicholas Watson scored 11 points and had 14 rebounds and Oneil Clarke scored nine points and had nine rebounds.
In the first game, despite a game-high 29 points from Kenneth Blackwood and double-doubles from Richard Chambers and Maurice Rodriques, Sav could not prevent their fourth straight loss.
All-Stars had a four-point lead after the first quarter but increased the lead to 20 points – 41-21 at half-time after – restricting the Westmoreland team to just five points in the second quarter.
Once again Goyan Malcolm led the scoring for All-Stars, with 23 points along with nine assists and seven steals, while Damion Henry scored 20 points and Neville Christie scored 14.
In addition to Blackwood’s 29 points, Chambers scored 18 points and had 12 rebounds along with six steals while Rodriques had 12 points and 10 rebounds.
