UWI to screen Walter Rodney documentary
THE annual Walter Rodney lecture series will host the new documentary, W.A.R. Stories: Walter Anthony Rodney, directed by Clairmont Chung.
The film covers the life of world-renowned, historian, author and activist Dr Walter Rodney, who was assassinated on Friday, June 13, 1980, at the age of 38, in his native Guyana.
The documentary explores Rodney’s personal and ideological development, while examining his involvement in the 1968 “Rodney riots” in Jamaica, Southern Africa’s struggle for independence and civil rebellion in Guyana.
It features luminaries, including publisher, Walter Bgoya of Tanzania, a personal friend and confidante of former President Julius Nyerere, Dr Clive Thomas, Dr Rex Nettleford, Dr Leith Mullings, Amiri Baraka
and Rodney’s daughter, Asha Rodney.
The film will be shown inside the N1 Lecture Theatre at University of the West Indies, Mona on November 13 at 5:30 pm.
