Gaga’s Bad Romance a non-stop shocker

Video: Bad Romance

Artiste: Lady Gaga

If there is one thing sure about Lady Gaga, it is that she is an enigma. No one ever knows what to expect of her, except something out of the norm. She definitely lived up to this reputation in her latest video release, Bad Romance.

In terms of location the video generally takes place in a sterile-looking, white room. The video opens with Gaga seated on a throne, surrounded by henchmen with an erotic aura, which prepares the viewer for an atypical experience. We are then taken to the ‘Bath Haus of Gaga’ where several white coffin-like boxes are laid out. This is where things get a little strange. Out of these coffins emerge females dressed in peculiar latex body-suits and crown headdresses, moving in a rather mindless yet controlled manner. The choreography for this scene resembles something from Michael Jackson’s Thriller except the dancers seem more deranged in their delivery.

In another scene Gaga is a demented doll with dramatically large eyes. She is being held ‘captive’ and forced to drink some kind of clear fluid fed toher by two nurses. The follow up to this scene shows Gaga surrounded by females who are tugging at her garment, all of which is taking place under the watchful eye of several men looking to buy the female offerings. Interchanging with this scene is a naked perplexing ‘alien’-type figure Gaga, with a pronounced spine protruding through her skin (strange, right?).

Instead of the ‘captive’ concept the video leads to a scene where she is surrounded by diamonds as though some kind of idolised goddess, with men seated in a circle around her.

Fashion is, as we all know, Lady Gaga’s specialty. Throughout the video she changes into several different outfits, one in particular very bizarre. Here, she is dressed from head to toe in a futuristic-looking gold material as she utters ‘walk walk fashion baby’.

But then, it is Lady Gaga so we dare not question her eccentric taste. Towards the end we see Gaga walking towards a gentleman seated on a bed. She looks quite posh, fully decked out in all white, but looks as though she’s up to no good. Seconds later the bed catches fire and by the final scene Gaga, reminiscent of Amy Winehouse, lies in the burnt bed with the skeleton of the man beside her. This is probably one of the most striking imagery left in our minds after watching the video.

Overall, the Bad Romance video is creative albeit in a disturbing way.

There is never a dull moment in the video, as every scene has something which captures the attention of the audience. From the random interjection of a strange hairless cat, the use of gorgeous supermodels in supporting roles, and the dynamic special effects, Lady Gaga hit this one out of the ball park once again.

A really strange crab-looking outfit was just a little bit too out-of-the-norm along with the dance moves and other strange displays by Lady Gaga. It is very entertaining but for the most part there are several scenes which call for the raising of an eyebrow.

The Heart Health Fund Run is a sponsored walk, jog or run where one doesn’t have to be an athlete or a fitness enthusiast to participate.

Companies, schools, individuals, groups and families are invited to collect sponsorship forms and flyers at the office of The Heart Foundation of Jamaica at 28 Beechwood Avenue in Kingston and show their support.

The aim of The Heart Health Fund Run is not only to raise funds for the work of the Foundation, but also to emphasise the benefits of exercise to a healthy heart; as today only a small fraction of the Jamaican population achieves the minimum amount of exercise per day of thirty (30) minutes.

Where: Emanciation Park

Time: 7: 00 am to 11:00 am
