Three-way tussle for Wesern mid-season slots
GRANVILLE, St James — Former champions Seba United, Reno FC and last season’s beaten finalists Frome will this afternoon continue their quest for a place in the mid-season final of the Captain’s Bakery Western Confederation Super League as the first round ends.
Reno and Seba are tied at the top of the tables on 26 points and will complete their fixtures against Mt Pelier and Granville, respectively.
Frome, in third place on 21 points, have a game in hand and will host Prosper. They must win to have any hope of taking part in the mid-season play-off.
While Reno, who blanked Catherine Hall 3-0 in a rescheduled game on Thursday, should win and secure their place, Seba could struggle if Granville turn up in a positive frame of mind.
Granville are coming off a 0-2 loss to Bamboo on Wednesday after playing to a 2-2 draw against Mt Pelier on Sunday and with no chance of advancing to the final, will be seeking to stay in touch with the leaders.
Wednesday’s defeat was the first time of the season for Granville, who have a league-high 22 goals and were failing to score.
It is expected that Garth Johnson, Michael Thompson and Odane Snow will be seeking to take the game to Seba.
Seba, meanwhile, will be pushing for the win to secure their place in the final and will be seeking their third straight win after a 0-0 draw away to Frome.
Wilfred Smith will lead the Seba attack that is expected to give a deflated Granville defence a lot of problems.
Reno are on cruise control and anchored by the best defence in the competition, having conceded just two goals in 10 games, should get the better of Mt Pelier, who are seventh, 16 points adrift of the leaders.
With the likes of Davian Thorpe, Obrien Woodbine, Martin Williams and Patrick Graham at their disposal, Reno will start odds on favourites.
