Cornwall defend titles in basketball semis today
MONTEGO BAY, St James —Double defending champions Cornwall College will continue the defence of both titles in the ISSA/KFC Western Conference high school basketball championships this afternoon as the semi-finals get underway with a double-header at the Montego Bay Cricket Club.
At 2:00 pm, Cornwall College, who won all 10 games in the regular season, will take on Muschett High in the Under-16 game followed by the Under-19 game against Mannings School.
Cornwall are expected to win both games today after having swept the season series against both schools.
While the Under-16 game should be a walk in the park for the Montego Bay school, Mannings made Cornwall work hard in the second of their two games last week as Cornwall won by just five points in Savanna-La-Mar as Mannings staged a fourth-quarter rally, outscoring Cornwall 30-14 after trailing by 21 points at the end of the third quarter.
Cornwall’s effort should be concentrated around the trio of Gavin Brown, Christopher Smith and Peter Michael Reid who has led them so far this season.
Andre Davids, who played briefly for the Sav Hawks in the National Basketball League-West, will lead the Mannings team, along with Troy Reid, Ruel Gordon and Lenworth Pryce.
The semi-finals will continue tomorrow with Herbert Morrison taking on William Knibb Memorial in two games, also at the Cricket Club courts.
