Fuller fires Stoke City to historic win over Arsenal
LONDON, England (CMC) — Jamaican forward Ricardo Fuller stung Arsenal with two goals yesterday and lifted Stoke City to their first ever English FA Cup victory over the famous London club.
Fuller netted headed goals in the second and 78th minutes to oust Arsenal in the fourth-round fixture at Stoke’s Britannia Stadium where 19,735 fans were in attendance witnessed the 3-1 victory.
“The spirit was fantastic from our lads,” an elated Stoke City manager Tony Pulis said after the game.
Denilson had pulled Arsenal level near the break, but second-half strikes by Fuller and Dean Whitehead vaulted Stoke to victory in front of their thrilled home fans.
In the fifth round, Stoke will face Manchester City, who knocked off Scunthorpe 4-2 in yesterday’s other match.
Stoke got the start they wanted when Rory Delap’s famed long throw found Fuller, who darted between defenders and placed a neatly angled header past Lukasz Fabianski in Arsenal’s goal after just 70 seconds.
The constantly pressing Fuller almost forced a second goal when he ran past Armand Traore on the right flank in the 25th minute but Mamady Sidibe, from 12 yards, mis-hit his cross.
Fuller should have earned a penalty when caught by Mikael Silvestre’s late challenge, but the Caribbean striker stayed on his feet in an effort to get to the ball and that decision may have influenced the referee’s decision to not award a penalty.
Denilson, latching onto a free-kick pass from Fabregas, equalised in the 42nd minute when he drove a low, deflected shot inside goalkeeper Thomas Sorensen’s right post into the bottom corner.
Sidibe and Fuller combined for Stoke’s go-ahead goal on 78 minutes.
After speeding down the right, Sidibe floated a perfectly weighted cross inside for another headed goal by Fuller, who had also scored last season against Arsenal in premier league home-and- away fixtures.
Stoke replaced Fuller and Delap with Tuncay Sanli and Salif Diao in the 85th minute and Whitehead hit the winner a minute later.
The result marked a miserable return to the Arsenal line-up for experienced central defender Sol Campbell.
