Johnson’s title eliminator with Mack is on again
MIAMI, Florida (CMC) — The International Boxing Federation (IBF) light heavyweight world title eliminator between Jamaican Glen Johnson and the American Yusaf Mack is on again and will be staged on February 5 in Florida.
The 12-rounder was originally slated as the co-main event for the cancelled January 30 Andre Berto-Shane Mosley card in Las Vegas.
The winner of the Johnson-Mack bout, now scheduled for the NSU Arena in Miami, will become the IBF’s mandatory challenger to light-heavyweight champion Tavoris Cloud, of the USA.
The Las Vegas promotion was called off when distraught Haitian champion Berto pulled out the title-defence against Mosley following the catastrophic earthquake in his Caribbean country.
Berto announced in the past week that he was focusing on his family and the Haitian people and had no choice but to withdraw from the bout.
Johnson, 41, has lost two of his last four bouts — both to American Chad Dawson — and is aiming to reclaim a world 175-pound title.
He has a current ring record of 49 wins (33 knockouts) against 13 losses and two draws.
Johnson has been among the most prominent light heavyweights in the world this past decade — a three-time world title challenger before winning the IBF championship in February 2004 when he landed a 12-round unanimous decision over Britain’s Clinton Woods.
Johnson won the World 2004 Fighter of the Year Award for his victories over legendary Roy Jones and the highly rated champion Antonio Tarver and the Mack bout gives him a chance to revive his championship career after his points loss to Dawson in Connecticut.
The 29-year-old Mack has a ring record of 28 wins (17 knockouts) against two wins and two losses.
