MONTEGO BAY, St James — International Association of Athletics Federations (IAAF) World Youth and World Junior 100m champion Dexter Lee made a successful Indoor debut on Saturday when he won the men’s 60m dash at the Niswonger Invitational held at East Tennessee State in Johnson City, Tennessee racing to a smart 6.71 seconds time.
Lee, the former Herbert Morrison High School standout who also won the Boys’ Champs 100m last season in an outdoor best 10.31 seconds, had to wait through three false starts, as Savannah State’s Sophomore Eric Plump was disqualified.
The 18-year-old Lee, who is expected to defend his 100m title at the WJC in Canada later this year, represented Reebok and beat Western Carolina University senior Dominique Young (6.79 seconds) and Manteo Mitchell (6.84 seconds).
Lee had run 6.91 seconds in the heats, the sixth-fastest time of the first round.
Mitchell returned to win the 200m later in 21.34 seconds.
Lee’s training partner, World Championships and Olympian Shereefa Lloyd, was also in action at the meet, winning the 60m/200m sprint double in 7.44 seconds and 24.00 seconds, respectively.
After running 23.96 seconds in the heats, Lloyd who represented Adidas, returned to win the 200m final in 24.00 seconds, ahead of South Carolina States’ Freshman Erica Peake (24.69 seconds) and Savannah State’s Sophomore Amara Jones (24.81 seconds).
Lloyd had the second-fastest time of 7.56 seconds in the heats of the 60m behind South Carolina State’s Shantrell Jenkins, but turned the tables in the final to beat Jenkins 7.45 seconds to 7.47 seconds.
At the same meet, former Immaculate Conception High hurdlers Kimberly Laing, a senior at the University of Alabama was second in the 60m hurdles in a personal best 8.41 seconds, while former Alpha Academy thrower Jerrine Foster was third in the shot put with a throw of 14.25m.
