UWI CARIMAC moves further into online journalism
KINGSTON, Jamaica – The Caribbean Institute of Media and Communication (CARIMAC) of the University of the West Indies (UWI) today announced that it is offering a Bachelor of Arts in Journalism as part of several new degree programmes over the next three years.
CARIMAC said that the three-year degree in journalism will be offered at the Mona Campus here in the 2010/2011 academic year starting in September as well as the degree in Digital Media Production that is already being offered at the University’s Western Jamaica Campus in Montego Bay.
“The BA in Journalism will produce a graduate who will be competent in print, broadcast and new media journalism,” says CARIMAC’s director Dr Canute James.
“There is increasing convergence in media, and the intention is to produce graduates who will have the skills for working on all journalism platforms. Students who successfully complete our programmes will be globally competitive.”
CARIMAC’s multi media coordinator, David Bain, said that degree in Digital Media Production is aimed at producing web designers, content management professionals, podcast producers, internet video producers and flash animators.
“This course addresses the need for design and production skills in a very dynamic media and communication environment. There is a strong emphasis on internet related skills.”
