Cornwall, Mannings split Conference match-ups
MONTEGO BAY, St James — Double defending champions Cornwall College suffered mixed fortunes as the semi-finals of the ISSA/KFC Western Conference Basketball League got under way at the Montego Bay Cricket Club on Monday.
Cornwall advanced to the finals of the Under-16 section by extending their unbeaten run and beating Muschett High 78-47, but their reign in the Under-19 category ended as they were ambushed by Mannings, 77-65.
Mannings gained revenge after losing to Cornwall 2-1 in the final last year.
In the Under-19 match-up, Mannings got off to a fast start, outscoring Cornwall, 26-18, in the first quarter to take a lead they would never relinquish as they beat their rivals for the first time this season after two losses.
The teams were almost equal for the other three quarters, with Mannings slightly ahead, 51-47.
Delano Foster led Mannings with 22 points, while Ruel Gordon got a triple-double with 16 points, 26 rebounds and 13 steals. Lenworth Pryce scored 17 points, while Troy Reid scored 10 points.
Gavin Brown had a game-high 32 points for Cornwall, while Christopher Smith had a triple double — 12 points, 15 rebounds and 13 blocked shots.
As they had been doing all season, the Cornwall’s Under-16 team dominated, jumping out to a big 26-12 lead after the first quarter and were up 45-23 at half-time before relaxing in the third quarter, scoring only nine points as Muschett cut the deficit to trail, 54-37.
Cornwall, however, stepped up the pace in the fourth quarter to run out easy winners.
Roshane Hinds led the way with 21 points for Cornwall; John Audley Jackson scored 14 points and had 19 rebounds, while Alex McFarlane scored 12 points.
Three players — Shavoy Daley, Travis Green and Kise Brown — all had 10 points for Muschett.
