Goldsmith meet to honour Vassell
THE 1500m for Class 3 Boys has been added to the line-up for this year’s Youngster Goldsmith Hurdles and Field Events Classic set for Saturday, February 6, at the National Stadium.
The event was included to help athletes qualify for this year’s Inter-Secondary School Sports Association (ISSA) Grace/Kennedy Boys & Girls Athletic Championships which celebrates 100 years this year.
The Hurdles and Field Events Classic, now in its 13th year, was launched at the GraceKennedy headquarters on Harbour Street in Kingston yesterday. It is named for the former Kingston College student and physical instructor.
Among the events listing are the Swedish Relay which covers a 1000m distance with four legs progressing from 100m to 400m; triple jump, high jump; javelin; shot put; discus and hurdles races, starting at 70 metres up to 110m.
Over 2,500 athletes from 32 schools are expected to participate at this year’s meet.
National shot put champion Nadia Alexander, who in 2004 as a St Hugh’s student became the first Jamaican high school athlete to win the event at the Penn Relays in Philadelphia, will be patron of the meet, while former Kingston College throws coach Michael Vassell will be this year’s honouree.
Meanwhile, meet organisers disclosed big plans for next year’s staging, which includes a return to the National Stadium and extending an invitation to overseas athletes to participate.
